The Cancer That Shouldn't Be

Pap tests, which screen for cervical cancer, are performed some 55 million times each year, yet it results in false negatives between 13 and 45 percent of the time. A new genetic test is far more accurate, yet many doctors still cling to the outmoded test, Miller reports. Some doctors continue to rely on Pap tests because they bring women into the examining room once per year, while other doctors are reluctant to lose the income from a yearly test to a once-every-three-years test. Miller describes the situation clearly and effectively in this piece, with plenty of statistics and explanations.
