Job Description:
- Completes laboratory analysis of specimens accurately and with precision.
- Provides customer service by answering broad technical questions, and directing others to appropriate resources.
- Manages specimens accurately and efficiently to provide quality results for laboratory testing.
- Ensures specimen processing to maintain accurate specimen results.
- Performs testing procedures accurately and efficiently in order to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.

- Completes laboratory analysis of specimens accurately and with precision.
Performance Expectations
- Demonstrates organizational skills by prioritizing requests. Plans and utilizes time in order to ensure accurate and timely reporting of laboratory tests, especially in critical or life threatening situations. No more than 2 variances / year.
- Demonstrates knowledge of special procedures. Includes colony counts and the amount of growth accurately, matching the amount reported on the gram stain. No more than 5 variances / year.
- Participates in continuing educational requirements by attending lab meetings, attending workshops, responding to instructional e-mail, etc. Attends 90% of staff meetings.
- Participates in annual skills and competencies, receiving evaluation of technique by direct observation and completing annual exam. Participates in developing Competencies.
- Compares specimen label and/or requisition to patient orders prior to testing.
- Provides customer service by answering broad technical questions, and directing others to appropriate resources.
Performance Expectations
- Accurately enters patient information as it applies to the microbiology specimens.
- Performs clerical duties accurately and efficiently. Performs duties as microbiology technologist.
- Answers the phone by the 3rd ring and is professional and courteous, resolving all issues.
- Demonstrates knowledge of microbiology and can effectively communicate the knowledge.
- Seeks pathologist, director, or designee support as needed and appropriate.
- Manages specimens accurately and efficiently to provide quality results for laboratory testing.
Performance Expectations
- Monitors specimen prioritization and workload. Monitors specimen acceptability using specimen rejection and variance log.
- Ensures adequate inventory of reagents and supplies. Orders as needed.
- Monitors specimens receipt in the LIS: resolving compliance issues.
- Establishes written policies and procedures, Monitors deviations from policies and procedures including documentation. Up dates policies and procedures according to regulatory agencies including but not limited to CACHOU, CAP, FDA and the State of Florida.
- Ensures specimen processing to maintain accurate specimen results.
Performance Expectations
- Introduces new techniques, methods and procedures in the department.
- Reviews pending reports and resolves issues. Monitors stat tests and turn around times and documentation. Educated staff on improvements.
- Prepares send outs according to policy to include proper packaging, contacting courier, and confirming pickup. Monitors results and notification of proper individuals.
- Compiles monthly department statistics to be reported to various groups including Quality within the organization.
- Performs testing procedures accurately and efficiently in order to ensure regulatory compliance.
Performance Expectations
- Indicates knowledge and organization of workload through quality of work produced and work completed.
- Instructs and orients new personnel. Performs and / or assures all necessary validation, training, and competencies in the department. Develop's and maintains education and training for employees.
- Ensures that surveys are run, resulted, reviewed and discrepancies are resolved
- Establishes, maintains and reviews all Quality Control within the department with documentation. All according to regulatory requirements. Maintains quality control records. Runs / reviews all QC at the required times with documentation, and problem solving any variances. No more than 2 variances per year.
- Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others to optimize job performance and foster working relationships.
Performance Expectations
- Establishes department specific policies for downtime. Handles downtime according to laboratory procedure.
- Works other shifts,additional days or stays longer as needed.
- Performs all other job duties as assigned, doing so with a positive, professional, and cooperative manner.
